This company has been formed tor fche purpose of providing more efficient steam communication between the different; ports of New Zealand— the want; of which h*s been much felt for some time paat, and which is becoming more perceptible as the growing trade of fche colony is developed. 16 is desired to establish a weekly line of Steamers between Ofcago and the principal Northern ports, ta put oa a steamer between Danedia and the West Coast Ports of the Mddfe Island, and also to provide for the efficient; conduct of the trade two and from fche several smaller Ports on the Coasts of Ofcago and Canterbury. For these purposes the following new vessels will be required ; — , Three firsfc-class Steamers for the trade between Dunediu and Manakau, to be b»ilfc in Eiirope, and capable of carrying Irom 40!) to 500 tons of cargo, fifcted; , with compound engines and the latest improvements, and wifch superior passenger accommodation, suited fco the requirements of the present day. These steamers will be 0' such class and speed as will ensure every facility fco shippers of goods, and convenience to the travelling public. : One boat of smaller capacity and light draft j of water, especially adapfced to fche trade : to the West: Cbasfc of the Middle island. With a view to commencing operations without delay, ifc has been arranged to take over, on. the Ist; of January next, the steamers Mori, Beantifal Star, and Samson, belonging to the - Harbour Steam Company's fleet, and aho their new steamer, just built; on the Clyde, specially for the Timaru and Lyttelton trade, and which is expected to arrive in the colony e»rly iv February. These vessels will afc once create a revenue for the Company, and, ifc is believed, will be sufficienfi to carry ou the trade of the ports on fche Coasts of Ofcago and Canterbury. Mr James Mills, who has so successfully conducted the business of the Harbor Company feom its commencement, will continue fco act as Manager of this Company. ; Ifc is estimated thafc, to carry out these proposals- a capital of £150,000 will be required, 008. to provide for this ifc is proposed fco call up £4 per share, making a fcofcal of £100,000, and fco borrow the remaining £50,000 on debenture* bearing a low rate of infceresfc.
