Johnstone of the Incumbency of Christ ChurctC and of his approaching departure from amongst us, this Synod desires to express to him its high appreciation of his assiduous and earnest discharge of his duties, both in his parish and in outlying districts, during the past ten years, and also of the skill and ability witb which he has during the same period aided the deliberations of the Synod; and this Synod 'earnestly hopes that both the Rev. and Mrs Johnstone may during. their lives be blessed with health and happiness." Several members of tbe Synod, clerical and lay, baving spoken in tbo highest terms of Mr. Johnstone, the resolution was carried by acclamation. Mr Johnstone in reply said, that if he were simply to say that he had experienced a most agreeable surprise in the tone of the resolution and the manner in which it had been iroved an.d supported, he should fail to do justice' to the sense of gratification witb which he, had listened to the many friendly voices that had just sounded in his ears with an overpowering charm. He feared he scarcely deserved such warm approval, but might say that during the ten years he had been in Nelson be bad endeavored to secure the esteem of bis parishioners and neighbors, and in whatever way bis poof services had been useful tbey had always been at their disposal. He hoped, and, had reason to believe, tbat the growth of the town in religion and virtue was steadily progressing; the gaol was comparatively empty, there was a general absence of crime, on all sides were to be seen cheerful faces, the Church was in a hopeful state, and the blessing of God appeared to be resting upon ns. Most earnestly did he hope that such was the case. He thanked those who were members of his congregation for their kindness in listening to him (Sunday after Sunday without wearying of his voice; he thanked his Churchwardens and Vestrymen for the manner 1 in which they had always worked with him ; and he wished again to thank the Synod for the resolution they had jast passed, aod to assure them that he heartily reciprocated their kindly feeling.
