A strong gale from the south-west was blowing, and the flames spread with great - rapidity. It destroyed a block of buildings before it could be stayed. Dowrie, grocer, insured for £*00 in the South Brittish;,, andthe building for £200 in the Scottish; Jollie, cutler, building insured for £100 in the Norwich Union, and £100 on the Btock in the same office; Merrftt, £100 in the New Zealand; Johnston, tailor? not insured, loss, £100 ; Merries loss, £300. The origin of the fire is unknown. The nominations for the Dunedin Cup, to be run in March next, must be made on Saturday next. A woman named Kate M'Donald has nearly killed a man named Richard Briggs with a spade. His dying depositions hare been taken.
