The nett profit was -£37,737, and the balance of ■undivided profits was £8,654; total, £46,392. It was proposed to declare a dividend of 12^ per cent, and carry forward £8,892. The report was adopted. October 23. Mr J. B. Owen is elected a Director of the Bank of New Zealand, vice Mr Thomas Russell, absent. Captain Wilson has leased a iarge tract Gf land called the Mtttu from the Natives, on behalf of the Government. This connects the Bay of Plenty with Poverty Bay. The Star of the South was compelled to exclude fifty tons of cargo for >Fiji. The company have chartered a schooner to take it.
Grahamstown, October 22. The gold returns for the month are given at 8000 ozs from a little over 6000 tons of quartz. Share market shows little charge. Caledonians are firm, October 23. '" The rumor that Mr Lusk retires from the Superintendency contest ig authoritatively contradicted. Plnre market firm. The District Court opens to-day; tha cases are unimportant, being mostly in bankruptcy. Cbrißtehurcb, October 22. Of the Adamant's immigrants, 150 found employment in two hours jifter the barracks were opened. The WBgej* were : for married farm laborers; £78 per annum, with cottage and firing; married couples, £60 per annum and iound; single men, £40 per annum, all found, and £10 bonus i f they remain twelve months; masons, 10s per day; carpenters, 9s ; siDgle women, £20 to £35 per annum. A ship is signalled, supposed to be the Merope, with 317 immigrants. The Jockey Club have decided not to remove the disqualification of M'Kay.

[The Phoebe, which arrived at Manukau yesterday, brings the following additional English and Australian telegrams.] London, October 11. There is less demand for money. The wool sales at the opening showed considerable competition, and prices were well sustained. Medium scoured, and lambs' were in active demand. The price of copper has recovered, and is now quoted at £93 to £94. The present quotations for Straits tin are £120 to £122. Australian ores are lower. The corn market is quiet. Home deliveries are lower. Adelaide wheat is in good demand, and finer qualities freely fetch 64s to 65s per 496 Its. October H. Stocks are depresse I, owing to the apprehension that moDey will be dearer. It is expected that there will be a large export of gold to America.
ADDITIONAL AUSTRALIAN.
Sydney. The following telegram respecting the San Francisco mail service was laid on the table of the Legislative Council: — Telegram from the Hon. Saul Samuel to the Colonial Secretary, Sydney. London, October 11.— Mr Russell and myself have had great difficulty; preliminary agreements only just signed for both services. Permanent service stands as advised by telegram of the 27 th August, except that fresh good men arc now asuociatod with Hall, who gives sureties for £25,000. Temporary service will be performed by steamers over 2000 tons gross. The best and fastest steamers that can be jrot w ni ]_ e employed, to be paid as follows:— £60,000 per annum for ten knots, with penalty of £2 for every hour's delay; for eleven knots £75.000, with a further premium for increased speed if obliged. The service will probably be eleven knots. Had to pay extra proportionate rate for speed owing to the difficulty of procuring suitable vessels for such sort of term of contract and loss of time in sending them out and bringing them '.back. The steamers secured are the McGregor, now near Hong-kong, which will be in Sydney on the sth December, and leave Sydney on the 20th December; the Tartar, which is now on the voyH**e to China, and will be in Sydney for thc second boat; and the Mongol, a new steamer, which wili be ready for sea in five weeks. The fourth boat is not yet named. The temporary service will continue only about nine months, when the permanent service will commence. Instructions have been given to the solicitors to prepare the contract. We had a most anxious task. Be assured that Russell and self will insist on proper provieion for efficient service.
