The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY OCTOBER 21, 1873.

CnORAL Union. — The first practice in town will be beld at the Harmonic Society's Boom, tbis evening, under tbe conductorship of Mr Ilolloway. TELFGRArnic News (?). — No doubt Mr Brown and Mr Quinlivan of Wan■jnnui took n good deal of interest in the match reported by telegraph to have taken place between their two horses yesterday, but the probability is tbat not a single individual is Nelson cares one straw about tbe re&ult and most certainly we object to paying for such rubbisb. English Mails.— -The Suez mail is due in Melbourne to-day, and will be brought to the Bluff by the Albion, wbich may be expected to arrive tbero about Sunday next. The outgoing mail wiil be forwarded by tbo Albambrn, which was to leave Melbourne on the 16th, and wiil consequently be due ot Hokitika this evening or io* morrow morning. The mail leaves Melbourne on tbe 7>b November. Poblic Meeting — Mr Curtis, in his .capacity of member of tbe House of Representatives, invites tbe electors to meet him at the Provincial Hall this evening. Uneventful as the session was, we bave no doubt that Mr Curtis will make an | interesting speech, and will fully explain | his action io all matters of both general and provincial interest tbat ceme before the House. i The Elections. — The Provincial elections ure shortly to commence, as wilt be seen by the numerous notices which appear to-day in our advertising columns. The whole of lhe writs are ma<'e returnable on ihe peme day, the 23rd December, and the course is for the hot time to be adopted of electing the Councillors before the Superintendent. Thouyh to us a novel, wk are not at all sure that this ia an objectionable plan. It has already been tried in Auckland and Otago, and was found to woik well in both those Province.
