PROVINCIAL. <•' Wellington, October 10. On the Tapscott case being called o* l to-day, tbe defendants (the sailors) did not aoewer. It is believed they have bolted. ■-Captain Flynn complained to the Provincial Secretary that the police were not actjve. T'ie Secretary sent for the inspector of Police, who said that Captain Flynn had no ground of complaint. He detained tbe men on board, who wanted to come on shore to see the magistrate. Tbe Secretary ordered him lo take the Barbor- master's boat, and go on board. Captain Flynn, hearing this, rushed olf to the Harbor-master, and when the sergeant applied for the boat Captain Flynn told the Harbor-master tbat the Inspector received no such orders. l'he Harbormaster refused to stir witbout written orders. Tbe sergeant of police then took a waterman's boat, and went on board. Tfae mate called tbe men aft. The sergeant asked if any of them wanted to see the magistrate. Four of them said "yes," and tbat they had been refused leave by the captain, who told them he was the only law they had to mind. The sergeant took the names of the men, and informed them that tbe police boat would go for them in the morning. One inan on board gays be sever signed articles; another says that he belonged? to the Halcione, and Was drunk ashore. When he came to his senses he found himself aboard the Tapscott, and was told he had signed articles. He knew nothing about it. The men are all a poor-looking lot. When tho eight seized the boats yesterday, the mate threatened them with revolvers. Warrants were issued against them yesterday. General sympathy is in favor of the men. Both of the local papers to-day state that Bernard King, the mate remanded to America, is to be takeji in tbe Tapscott, on board of wbich a call has been fitted up for bim. Great indignation is felt at this, Captain Flynn baving aaid •' He only wished he had tbat man to go home with bim." An indignation meeting is talked about. Dunedin, October 11. The men injured by accident on Thursday are still in a critical condition. Messrs M'Meckan and Blackwood take the intercolonial representatives to Melbourne and back for single tare. It is stated that the W^ste Lands Board arid the Government intend to give wider publicity to land sales than is aflorded by tbe Gazette, and wili advertise in all the local papers. There is no alteration in crop quotations. Auckland, October 11.
