H, J. L. Augarde quotes Monte Chriato shares — \, share at £50. Business done this day. Nelson Gasworks. — It will be seen by advertisement tbat the Provincial Government are inviting applications from those who require the gas to be laid on to their premises. The charge has been fixed at the very moderate rate [oi sixteen shillings per 1000 cubic feel. Cheap Advertising. — We, this morning, received the following telegram from our agent in Wellington : — "The hairless horse left per Wellington for Nelson today." We must express our surprise that he should have thought fit to make us pay for a piece of information that is of no value whatever to anyone but the owner of the " hairless horse." This is about the most glaring instance of want of discretion on the part of those who havo undertaken to circulate news by means of the telegraph, that we ever met witb. Nelson Exhib tion. — We understand that in consequence of the importance the Exhibition is gradually assuming, and the amouQt of work it involves, Dr Williams has found it impossible to continue to act as President, and that in consequence of a suggestion from him a deputation waited upon His Honor the Superintendent yesterday afternoon, and invited him to be President. His Honor, we are glad to learn, has consented, and Dr Williams will stili remain a member of the Executive Committee. At tho conclusion of a long interpleader case at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Ahaura, on Friday, one of the solicitors engaged on the winning side applied for substantial costs. The opposing counsel objected to the application, characterising it as an attempt to induce the Court to impose further ruinous expense on his client who, ho said, came into Court with a good caee, although the decision was against bim. " The other side" did not object to his learned friend's solicitude for the interests of his client, but ''he must really express unqualified surprise at the spectacle of a lawyer opposing an application for costs." His Worship inquired if euch conduct was to be considered unprofessional ? After some disputation, costs were eventually allowed to the extent of a professional fee of ono guinea, whereupon the ungrateful recipient of the fee in prospective remarked, solto voce. " Ouly a guinea ! why, the argument involved in the application was well worth five." A young gentleman, a native of Boston, for a short time a resident of one of the Western States, but whose family resides in the East, was most horribly mangled by a train of carriages pasing over his body. His friends and family were informed of the sad accident, and tbat his body had been forwarded to Boston. Upop tRe irrival of the train which convey'ed 'the corpse, some friends repaired to the station to receive and prepare it for sepulture before conveying it to the family. Upon arriving at the station they found a roughlookiDg box, properly directed, but upon which there was no charge, all expenses having been prepaid. Upon opening the box, they where much surprised ta-jfind not only tbe corpse properly dressed^and laid out, but enclosed in a beautiful coffin, expensively ornamented, and the sides of the face, which had been sadly disfigured, ingeniously concealed by the flowers, which were profusely placed around the body. Upon looking at the plate on the lid of the coffiD, besides the name, age, &c. of the deceased, there was to be seen that simple but powerful little emblem, the square and the compass, which has so often originated the enquiry, " What is Masonry ?" — and the mystery was solved.
