WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

Tuesday, September 30. The Board met at the Bridge "Hotel. All the members present. Tha Overseer reported as follows: — That J. Stagg has completed his contract forming in Pigeon Valley towards Stanley Brook, amounting to £56; me sum of £20 3s bas been expended in repairs on Wairoa Valley Road, £21 8s in Eightyeight Valley, and £8 2s 6d on tho main line at Wakefield. The clearing out of the ditch opposite Mr Mear's propeity has been let to him at 3s per chain, of which ihe Board pays one-half. A bridge in Rickett's Valley having fallen in, limber for a new one has been ordered. The price at which I can obtain broken metal along Tate's line is from 4s 6d to 5s per yard, and stones as picked from off the land at 6d or ls. I must again bring before your notice the condition of the bridge near Mr Botterell's. Mr H. Stafford will pay one-third of the expense of clearing out the ditch between his land and Mr Green's on Port Road, providing the Board will have the same done ; the water in flood times is backed up on to the road. The Secretary was directed to invite tenders, for next meeting, for erecting a bridge near Mr Botterell's, with stone walls and timber top. Mr Stafford's offer was declined for tbe present. The Overseer was directed to prepare an estimate of the probable quantity of bricks and tiles required. The Secretary reported having sent a new plan of road through Mr Siggelkow's land, lo which no reply has been recived. The Secretary produced a statement showing that the total value of rateable properties in the Waimea district, according to the assessment laid before the special meeliug on lhe 13th instant, was £611,344, which, at £d in the ponnd would yield a rate £1273, being about £300 in excess of the rate levied last year. It was resolved " That a rate of one halfpenny in the pound be levied, the same lo be payable on the 17th November at the Richmond Institution, but fcbat, for the convenience of the ratepayers, the collector atlßDd during the following days, one day in each of the other sub-dictricts." It was resolved, "As I'te increased assessment just made will put lhe Board in command of larger funds than Ihey have hitherto enjoyed, the Board will, as far as possible, put in order the several bye-roads within the distiicl — in all cases by repairing bridges and removing dangers — and, where further improvement is desired by those peculianly interested, by doubling the amount raised by such parlies from the funds of the Board." The attention of the Board having been called lo the fact that certain clauses of the Public Health Act, giving the Board powers in the removal oi nuisances and regulation of slaughter-house?, had been just brought, into operation by proclamation by the Governor, Mr Malcolm, as Health Officer, was direcied o ir-.p<nt all known or suspected places, end should the parties not comply with hia noticea, lo sue them through ibe Board's solicitor. It was also resolved '• That the General Government be again requested to furnish the Board, from lime lo time, with copies of the General Government Gazette, containing proclamations or regulations affecting the power of the Board under the Public Health Act, or any other Act the administration of which devolves upon the Board." Notice was given that at the next meeting it be considered whether the Board should be constituted a Corporation. Application was received from Mr C. Masters for permission to put up slip-bars on the road between Messrs Woolley and Higginß' in Maddox bush. Permission was granted on condition that such rails be removed by him whenever required to do so. Some letters protesting against the recent assessment having been received, it was resolved '* That all parties intending to appeal must deliver to the Board, seven days before the day of appeal, notice in writing of such intended appeal, specifying the property in respect of objection is made." It was resolved " That steps be taken to have legalized the streets marked out on section 25 Waimea East, so as the Board may be able to assist as in the caso of public bye-roads." Mr J. Lankow attended to request assistance in repairing the road by his land. The Overseer was directed to examine and report. The Overseer was instructed to put a footbridge at Richmond, over the ditch at the junction of lhe Trunk road with the street (hitherto unopened), south of the school. It was resolved " That notice bo given to all parties in arrears for rates, and that in future, if rates are not paid by the end of the month, the Secretary sue all in arrears without waiting for special instructions."
