i ountry Volunteers. — Inspection parades will be held as follows: — Wakefield Cadets, to-morrow at 5 p.m. ; Waimea Rifles, Saturday next, at 5 p.rc\ Prorogation of Parliament. — A telegram received just as wa wesn going to press, states that tho prorogation which was to have token place at 4 p.m. !.o-day, is postponed until to-morrow, at noon. Ha monio Society. — Tbe next quarterly concert will be held on Thursday, the 9th instant, when tbe charming little cantate, " The Ancient Mariner " will be performed. It is hoped tbat there will be a good muster at tbe practice tbia evening. Wesleyan Church Fund. — The sale of work that has for some months been advertised lo take place in aid of the above fund, was opened at the Masonio Hall this morning, and after inspecting tho various articles offered for sale, we can recommend tbose who are in want of either useful or ornamental goods of this description to pay a visit to the Hall, The frices are by no means exorbitant, and tbe workmanship of the hest quality. We will tomorrow furnish a list, of some of the principal articles offered for sa'e. Inspection Parade. — The City Companies' monthly inspection parade was held last night, Captain Sinclair, in the absence of Captain Baigent, acting as Inspecting Officer. The Artillery, numbering 61, including the band, the City Rifles 35, and the Cadets 30, marched to the Government grounds aud went through several manoeuvres, (lie music of tbe new band adding considerably to the spirit of the scene. It is intended to hold a review on the Prince of Wales birthday, to be followed by a Volunteer Ball, which is likely to prove a great, success. Exhibition Committee. — A meeting of the Committee was beld last, night. Mr Pickering having sent iu bia resignation as Hon. See. and Treasurer, it. was resolved — 1. That the Committee recti vo the resignation with much regret, anu thank Mr Pickering for the valuable services hitherto rendered, and regret that his business arrangements compel him to resign, but Ihey hope he will continue to act as a member of tho Committee. Resolved — 2. 'J bat Mr Eout having expressed his willingness to undertake tbe honorary duties, the Commit tc-e receive and accept his offer with many thanks, and authorise him Jo employ iu the discharge of his duties sueh clerical assistance as he may find necessary. Resolved — 3. That Mr Holloway be authorised .0 communicate with Mr Preshaw respecting his offer to send minerals from Hokitika. and to thank him on behalf of the Committee. Resolved — 4. ihafc a Deputation, consisting of Dr Boor, Dr Williams, Mr Rout and Mr Broad wait on the Provincial Government, fo ascertain on what terms the Hull can he obtained, and the assistance the Government will give tbe Committee, and also to invite the Superintendent to deliver the inaugural address. It was decided to ask Dr Hector to attend the Exhibition and deliver an address. It was also resolved that the Superintendent be asked to invite tbe members of the Colonial Executive to be present at the opening of the Exhibition. Fatal Accidents at Blenheim. — For some reason or another tbo following Blenheim telegram, which appeared in the Post of Saturday last was not forwarded to us: — David Main, known in Canterbury, was drowned, with his horse, this morning while crossing a channel cut by the iate overflow of tbe Opawa river, on the north side. About the same time Dr Besley, late of the Haleione, was drowned, while crossing a small creek near Atwood's, on the south side of the same river, nearly opposite the scene of the otber casualty. Dr Besley's body has been found. Tbe horse escaped. An inquest will probably take place on Monday, The affair has created a great sensation, as the Dr was much liked. Main's body has not yet been found.-
