A REPROOF.
To the Editor of thb Neison Evening Mail, . Sib —ln this morning's Colonist, I notice, under the heading " An Insinuation,'' an .extract from Hansard containing Mr Luckie's 'speech biv the sufrjyot of compeniation to the Patea settlers. In order to show that aU members of the House are not eo he irtless that gentleman, I would ask you to publish what was afterwards said by Mr Kolleston, who voted on the same side as Mr Luckie, and by Major Atkinson in reply. ..Mr Kolleston could not but u feel for the sufferings of those injured by the Native war —sufferings, the allusion to which in such a speech as tint of the hon. member for Nelson, caused feelings of Indignation in the mind of every man in this House." Mr.}or Atkinson 'would only say to the hon member for Nelson City, who made insinuations as to the motives which induced him to bring the matter forward, that it w»s probable the hon. i member was of so peculiar a nature that he i could not comprehend any motives actuating another man except those of selfishness and dup'icity Ttiat appeared to be the state of £the hon. member's mind, and he,(Mftjor Atkinson) must conte?s that he did not envy him. They all knew the old sa_\ ing, " Birds of a feather flock together," and he was sure, from the hon member's statement, that he (Major Atkinson) did not belong to any flock with which the hon, gentleman Wiis likely to go." Yours, &c, Hear Both Sides. Nelson, September 30,1873.
