IMMIGRANTS AND IMMIGRATION. To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Eib, — As a pendant to the telegram in your yesterday'a paper from Auckland— ia which it was stated that seventy-four families and sixteen tingle men lrom England per Berar, remain unemployed, and that their rations had been stopped by the Government which inveigled them lrom home — I send you the following extract iroin a letter which I received irom Christchurch a fewdays ago: — " Free immigration is all the go here; I don't know what wages will eome to. Three hundred or mor<i landed here about a week ago — ' a superior lot of statute adults,' they were called, as if they were so many working bullocks. Capital v. labor is the order [of the day. I am afraid very little good feeling will prevail between the employed and the employers. Long may Nelson be spared from such a etate of things is my wish." Yours, &c, E. T. r Nelson, September 16, 1875. The Kurunui Company, the oldest on the Thames, has paid £8000 in dividends this year. Mr Nathan, of the late firm of Jacob Joseph and Co., is about to erect a monster store in Wellington. The contract price for its erection js £4000. The Wellington Star Boating Club have ordered a pair-oared outrigger from Oxford, and are having a four-oared gig built in Wellingtonr The Otago Times learns by telegram that Messrs Shaw and Saville have reduced their freights from Loadoa to New Zealand to 30s per ton. Is Nelson to be represented at the approaching intercolonial rifle contest? Auckland,Otago, Canterbury, Ta'rannki, and Wanganui are going to Bend their marksmen. It is probable that Mr D. Guy, late of Nelson, will be one of the repfesentatives of the latter district. To say the " handsomest building in the colony " is to use rather a strong expression, but not one which, under the circumstances, could be called unjustifiable, if applied to the structure about to be erected for the Union Bank in Dunedio. So says the Guardian. A book has recently been published in London by Mr Henry Smythies, of New Zealand notoriety. . The title is ;— " The Education of Man ; a suggestive dissertation on the soul — what it is and how trained; with an appendix — Have Savages Souls? A " Lady Subscriber " writes to the Wellington Post objecting to the introduction of females into the telegraph department on the ground that " our frail sex will be found wanting in keeping the secrets, a thing which I don't think a woman knows how to do." The late Auckland fire has given rise to some tail writing. We quote from the Auckland Star : — " Hissing and cracky ling, the demon devourer seemed to give one great bound, and swallowed up its victim with a roar of triumph." We wonder w aether the " crackling " of a "demon devourer" is in any way similar to that which is to be found on a roast leg of pork. Our telegrams to-day announce the launch at Auckland of a schooner called the Julius Vogei. The owner of this vessel, Captain Read, of Poverty Bay, recently had another schooner, called the Donald M'Lean, which, however, came to grief. Captain Bead evidently has confidence in the floating powers of the present Government. — Post.
It is proposed to prohibit the importation of opium into Victoria on account of the terrible disclosures that have been made of the extent to which this drug is used for the purpose of. debauching young girls. ■ '"'■■' "■•-■■'. -■" - A Theatrical Company, consisting of Miss Juno, Mrs Philips, Mr and Mrs Garner, Mr and Mrs Andrews, Mr Hans Phillips, Mr/WdA Mrs Gladstaiie, Mr Byrne, and 'others' has been fanned in Victoria to travel through the Australian colonies and New Zealand, and commenced at Geelorig ba the 18th August. It is styled .'• The Eloise Juno Star Comedy Company," and is under the direction of the lady whose name serves for its distinguishing title. - The libel case against Mr Ballance, of the Wanganui Evening Herald, at the instance of Judge Rogan, has been settled. The libels complained of appeared in the Herald during Mr Ballance's absence, and that gentleman has now withdrawn' the imputations, and apologised for the publication. This has been accepted as satisfactory by the plaintiff, and the case is now settled. The Canterbury Press of Wednesday, eays : — A very melancholy and unfortunately fatal accident occurred last night on the South line, by which a man named William Bowis, a small farmer living at Ellesmere, met his death. The seven o'clock train from Rakaia had; arrived at the Yankee Crossing, near Weeden's, then coming at the rate of thirty miles an hour, when the engine encountered some obstacle which led the driver at first to believe it had been thrown off the i'Hne, On pulling up as soon as possible a man's leg was discovered on the right-hand side of the enginfe, fixed between the ash-pan and the injection pipe, and his hat between the driving wheel and the sand pipe. Some persons immediately ran down the line, when the man's body was found with one leg and arm torp. j)ff, a leg hanging by the skin, and part of. the other arm and portion of the face crushed away. A bottle containing rum was found r near the body. On examining the engine at Christchurch it was discovered ihat he had been caught by the guard iron ; there were blood and small pieces of flesh on the trailing wheel, and the same on the driving wheel, with some black and grey hair, and a small piece of bone. , ,
