PROVINCIAL. Wellington, September 9. To-day, before the Supreme Court, Mr Travers applied for writs of habeas corpus to bring up the bodies of tbe prisoners of the ship William Tapscott, now in gaol. The writ was granted. An application for a rule nisi to prohibit the Court of inquiry in the matter of the grounding of the s s. Ladybird from giving a decision was discharged. 5.25 p.m. Mr Henderson, of Messrs Brogden's firm, was examined to-day before the Petitions Committee regarding the immigration petition. Greymouth, Sept. 9. Double the number of shares required for the new Coal Company have been applied for. 3,400 shares have" been allotted to Dunedin, and 4,600 to Wellington. First-class fire clay has been discovered on the coai reserve. Tbe directors are arranging for the manufacture of firebricks. The allotment-call of the Coal Company is 48 per share, and is made payable on or before the Ist of Octob°r. Auckland, Sept. 9, Tbe Seagull, from Apia, reports that " bully " Hayes, of the brig Leonora was there. A representative of tbe United States had also arrived to annex the group. The whites and natives both favor annexation. PARLIAMENTARY. Wellington, September 10. In tbe House last night, a debate arose on the question that the House go into Committee on the Provincial Loan Bill. Eventually the motion was carried on the voices. Clauses one to nine were passed. The Premier promised to obtain an opinion as to whether tbe Provincial Councils could include in their Ordinances clauses removing the colonial liability. Clause 10 and 11 were postponed. Clauses 12, 13, and 14 wero struck out. Clause 19 naming the exemptions in rateable property caused a discussion principally on the question of rating pastoral and native lands. Mr Vo^-l promised to explain next day the intentions of the Government regarding native lands. The claoße passed.
