PERSEVERANCE COMPANY.

The following is Mr Hall's report of the Perseverance mine j— To iEB DnuEcroßS of Psbskvkravcjb 6. if. Co. Gkntlkkbk,—-In accordance with your request, I visited tiie Peresverance Company's gronnd at Bedstead Guily, and beg to forward you the following report. On inspecting the mine, I found that it had been worked from the surface cap downwards, instead of sloping from a low level upwards; greatly increasing the cost of raising, owing to the staff having to be shovelled np tathe underlie of the " reef" two or three times before it conld be brought t > the mine for conveyance to the mill. Also, long levels have fc:an put in at a great expense, which would not have been required if the mine bad been worked ss above suggested. These levels are useless for any future workings of the ground. In Act, that part of the mine, from the inclined drive upwards, has been worked in such a manner that the oost of raising must have been more than doable what it should bave been. For the future working I would recommend a short level from the inclined drive, sonth, to cut a block ot ground that Mr Adams informs me contains about 1000 tons of stone, and commence milling it as soon as possible; commence another level north, along the boundary; following tbe reef where practicable, so that the gronnd, if found worth working towards the machine house, may be ready for sloping before the southern block is completed. I am of opinion, from the way tbe gold bas run through your claim, and the general features of tbe country, that it is the same strike as Golden Gully, will cut the " Canterbury " a few feet from the "Decimal "corner peg. giving you a large block of country towork, and I would, therefore, recommend yoa to let the Decimal Company work out the ground up to the northern boundary, when yoa can continue their face from yonr level, and be a guide to any future levels you may find it necessity to pat in. From the peculiar natare of tbe conntry I would strongly recommend yoa to put no new levels in, without yoa . have some certainty of what you are driving for, tiie tote wall being extremely fiat T2ie battery is in good order, but not so clean as it should be. I found the po!c3, shafts, &c, very . rusty, which coald have been avoided if they had been coated with a mixture of grease and white lead, which ought to be done immediately to prevent farther corrosion. In conclusion, I see no reason why the mine should not pay a small dividend, it properly and economically worked, but would strongly impress upon the Board the necessity of keeping down their present expenditure until the mine ia farther ' developed.
