House of Representatives. Wellington, August 26. In reply to Mr Macandrepr, Mr Yogel said tbat the Government had reconsidered their decision announced in the early part of the session, and had decided to place on the estimates £5000 for trigonometrical surveys, in accordance with tho recommendation of the late conference of provincial surveys. The following bills were read a first time : A Bill to amend Savings bank Act, 1858, Merchant Shipping Act Amendment Bill, Steam Navigation Act Amendment Bill, and Bill for Regulation of cb'al mines. The report of the Committee on Life Assurance Companies Bill was agreed to. Bill read third time and passed. Tbe Promissory Oath [Notes ?] Bill, Weights and Measures Bill, and Dictriet Court Act Amendment Bill were passed in cmmittee. The Promissory Oaths [Note ?] Bill, Weights and Measures Bill, were read a third time. On a motion to go into committee on the Education Bill, Mr C. O'Neill moved the committal of it that day six months. He said he hoped that after discussion the

bill wauld be withdrawn. He looked upon it as a compromise between duty and fear. Mr Swanson said any education was better than none. V The Premier, Messrs -Bunny, Wood, Shephard, and M'Gillivary, joined in the debate. The amendment was lost by 39 to 11. August 27. In the House last-night, in Committee, the Education Bill was considered. The first part, " preliminary," passed without amendment. Part two, providing for Boards, their powers, &c, passed, except clause 7, which was postponed. Clause 8 was amended so as to give the Provincial Councils power to fix the number of members for Boards. Part 6 caused a discussion. The aided clauses were carried. The rending of the Scriptures in schools, provided for in part 7, was discussed, and on a division carried. Progress was reported. In the House to-day, Mr Fox laid on the table the report of a Select Committee of the legislature in Canada recommending the prohibiting of sale of alcoholic liquor in Cannula. Mr Tairoa gave notice of motion to ask the Government if they intended to call a Thames native to the Legislative Council. In reply to Mr Kelly, Mr M'Lean said Government would consider the giving of a small bonus for the first 10,000 gallons of rectified oil produced from anys prings in the Colony. The following Bills were read a first time : —A Bill to abolish imprisonment for debt. A Bill to amend the Otago Waste Lands Act, 1872. A Bill to vest the Grey river coal reserves in the corporation of Greymouth.
