Henar c Potae, at a meeting at Poverty Bay, aftor the adjournment of the Commission, said the discontent amougst the natives w as deeper seated than was supposed. ~H.e urged that it was the duty of the G-overnment to keep the Court open, for if, through the action of Henare Matua, the business was stopped, the natives would regard it as a further sign of weakness an d degeneration on the part of the Europe ans. The majority of the natives support the repudiation movement. The action of the Government in stopping the Commieision is regarded in Napier as a mistake. August 23. Sailed : "William Davie for London. i The Independent exonerates Mr Brogden from all blame for abandoning the immigration contract, and denies the Agent General's claim to any credit for the introduction of Brogden's immigrants. The correspondence shews that Mr Brogd^n notified the Agent General in November that their immigration scheme would be suspended, and that the Agent General only informed the Government in April.
