I New Zealand.— v The London Times in its issue of the 220 d May has a well written article upon this colony, founded upon a letter from its Wellington corr^Si,. pondent. The editor recommends all those., who wish to accumulate wealth, be they gentlemen or artizans, if they cannot secure it at home, to emigrate to New Zealand, Canterbury being the favorite province. The supposed qualifications for emigrants are beiDg able '• to write a Greek poem " and to know how " to bleed a cow," but a little more of the latter. Floods in Mablborough. — The Picton Press of Wednesday last says: — From k a Ha velock correspondent we learn that ' the floods so prevalent last week nearly all over the colony, were very destructive in that locality. In the Pelorus the water rose higher than has been known for a number b£'years, and the saw-millers have suffered a severe loss by the washing away of logs and timber. Mr Dive had a large stretch of tramway in the Kaiuma carried away, besides sustaining other damage. Many of the settlers in the district have lost largely by the drowning of cattle, and Mr Davis, the brewer, had so much water on his premises that his ales removed themselves out of his cellar without assistance. , The Maoris were also sufferers, as they had to remove from their usual resting place in consequence iof their habitations being washed away. the floods and weather that accompanied them were the most severe that have been experienced of late years in Havelock or the district,'-- ' j A large stingaree was recently captured by some fishermen who were fishing near the mouth of the Yarra. It was discoyerd in the wings of their net, darting at and swallowing the fish. With some difficulty th~ey succeeded in capturing it. On opening tfrfejish theyi found over half a basket of trout\iu its stomach. The liver, which they rendered down, yielded upwards of six gallons of oil as clear as water. The fishermen state that it ia of much greater value than cod-liver oil for consumption, liver complaints, scalds, and burns, and also a cure for rheumatism, v while the taste and smell are not disagreeable. The monster weighed upwards of five cwt, and measured eight feet nine inches from its head to the tip of its tail, five feet ten inches across, and one foot cix inches through.
The Sbsh of Persia's? throne is of saudalwood, studded with emeralds; the carpet of the throne-room is sown with pearls; and he wears the Darynnoor, v/ sister diamond of the Kobinoor, in his belt. Resident Magistrates in isolated districts of the North Island have occasionally to perform somewhat unusual duties. For instance, the Resident Magistrate at Raglan writes to the Native Minister, saying: —•' In accordance with your instructions, I have vaccinated very many of the Maoris; in fact, all I could persuade to submit to it." Thm following is a specimen of English weather during last year: —Dirty days hath September, April, Juue, and November: from 7th February until May the raio it raineth every day; all the rest have thirfy-one without a blessed gleam of bud; and if any of 'em had two-aod-thirty they'd be just na wet and twice as dirty. The Manchester Qourier reports the death of Mr Nathan Lees, a retired cotton manufacturer who had amassed it fortune of two-and-a-half million?, besides being possessed of a large landed property. He was 75 years of age and a bachelor. It is related of Mark Twain that a few months after his first baby was bora, he wqs h6Ltjift£s it on his knee. His wife said: " Nbw confess, Samuel, that you love the child ?"vt I can't do that," replied the humorist, " but am willing to admit that I respect the little thing for its father's sake."
