An accident occurred on the railway, when the engine was thrown off the line, and tbe carriages were smashed. No lives were lost. Wellington, August 21. A meeting of the Otago and Canterbury members was held yesterday morning, for considering the various questions raised in the Financial Statement. Amongst others, tbe proposals to take security in land for future lines, the construction of branch railways, the power of the provinces to borrow, and the raising of a loan for the purpose of purchasing native lands in the North Island. A Sub-Committee consisting of three members from each province was appointed to draw up resolutions for consideration at a future meeting. Theße resolutions will be baßed upon the opinions generally expressed at the meeting, which were in the direction that tbe main lines of communication named in the schedule to the Railway Bill, 1871, be completed out of the loan without land as security; that tbe proposal to take land would be resisted, and that the two provinces would of themselves construct tbe various branch lines ; that the meeting was not unfavorable to a loan to be charged upon tbe colony for the purpose of purchasing a landed estate for the North Island provinces. The coal barque Ann Melhuish missed stays, and went a-ground at the Heads today. The steamer Wellington from Auckland went to her assistance, towed her off and brought her into the harbor. A part of keel was broken, and two and a-half feet of water was in the hold. No serious damage done. Reefton, August 21. The Golden Fleece sent down 1,600 ounces, and the Wealth of Nations 400 ounces of retorted gold to Greymouth this morning. The price of gold has been reduced by agreement amongst the various banks from £3 18s to £3 16s. Napier, August 21. The General 9-overnment have resolved to place a small ten- horse power steamer on Lake Taupo. The Engine is to ba constructed at Napier, and the boat built at Taupo. She will be launched at the beginning of next year. Greymouth, August 21. The Directors of the Greymouth Coal Company have selected the site for a shaft. They have found a splendid seam of coal from 14 to 16 feet thick, and have resolved to start work ot such a low level as will drain and prove the mine. The mine haß been christened Wallsend Drive.
