*»* We are dcfiirous of affording- every reasonable facility (or the dif.eiiHsion of public subjects; but it mn-rt be understood tliat we are in no way responsible for tbe opinions expressed by correspondents. To thb Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail Sir — As ihe English news have lately reported the health of the Pope to be of au alarming character, a {"rood portion of your readers will be glad to read the following account given by the last mail : — " A violent thunderstorm last Priday, during which the electric fluidistruck the Chamber of D j puties at Monte Citorio caused a great change in the atmosphere, wbich, after and during a hail storm, became absolutely cold. The Holy Father, who has been occasionally in a room adjoining that which he usually occupies, stayed rather too long, considering the temperature was some fifteen degrees lower there thon in his own room, and in consequence bad a slight return of the rheumatic puins -Prom which he has lately suffered. The Government and Republican papers, of course, made the most of fhis<, and said he was dying, and even dead. The answer to this is, that on the 13th he received fourteen cardinals, besides v lame number of prelates and other gentlemen who went to the Vatican to coucjrafula'e him on his entering his 82nd year. His Holiness is quite suffi fci-ntly well to rise at, half-past six o'clock, which he has done all the current week, and to meet his physicians, who arrive early at the palace, with cheerful an-i often witty greeting. It is needless to add that his Holiness transacts as usual all the business connected with his aueust. office, and reads dispatches, write?, dictates, converses, and commands — all with thn fl-mie clearness and promptitude as ever — fnr five or six hours consecutively The malady cr rather inconvenience is simply local, and his general health is excellent.
