BOARD OF WORKS.

Friday, August 8. The first meeting of the new Board was held on Friday night. Present, all the members. Mr Percy was again appointed chairman. Messrs Thompson, Jennings, D. Bums, and Hooper were appointed a Public Works aud Health Committee ; and Messrs R. Burn, Percy, Dodson, and Fell, a Finance Committee. . Mr Watts was re-appointed collector of rates and Inspector of nuisances. The Surveyor and Inspector were instructed to examine into the gorse nuisance and report at next meeting. Gravelling in Manuka-street, Almastreet, and the lane leading from Colling-wood-street to the police office was ordered to be done. On the motion of Mr Burn it was resolved : — " Tbat the Public Works committee be requested to bring up a report next Board night upon the works that would probably be required during the ensuing year, Russell-street to be especially included in such report. The approach to a foot-bridge in Tasmanstreet was ordered to be made good. Mr Dodson, in reference to a letter which bad appeared in the public press complaining that £27 had been paid by the Board for additional cart hire, no tenders for the work having been called for, asked whether such statements were true. The Surveyor reported that they were not, inasmuch that tbe extra carting for the present year had all been done by Orsman under the terms of his contract for the previous year, which had been let by tender, and for which his was the lowest tender, viz., 12s per day for one man and horse and cart. Cheques were signed to the amount of £55 18s lid, and the Board adjourned.
