THE NEW TARIFF.
\From the Evening Post] Below we publish a full comparative statement showing tho increase of the new duties as compared with fhose previously charged on the same goods. The first column shows the duties actually paid during the year 1871-2 on the various articles imported and cleared direct from the ship, The second column shows the duty which would have been charged had Mr Vogel's new tariff been in operation last year. The extra amount of duty would, however, actually have been larger than we have shown, as owing to the way in which the official Customs returns are compiled, wb have been unable to include goods which were warehoused and afterwards cleared for home consumption. We have for convenience sake omitted shillings and pence from the calculation. It will be seen that the new tariff almost exactly doubles the duty in nearly every case. The only reduction is on the item of con-
:—
It will be seen from the above that under this new tariff, passed only for the sake of convenience and uniformity, even if the consumption of the articles dealt with does not in the current year exceed that of 1871-2, excluding all goods warehoused before being cleared, the revenue will be increased by the sum of £84,423 The new tariff, therefore, shows an increase of £846 above 100 per cent all round.
