Wabduop, Fsq., Shortland-street. npHE rapidly-increasing importance of the JL mercantile interests in the group of islands ' comprised in the Kingdom of Fiji, and the absence of nny reliable medium of exclruige in that territory, have suggested the formation of this Company, which, it is intended, shall supp y < rdinary Banking facilities and undertake commercial agency business, by indenting goods, advancing on the produce of settlers, and undertaking consignments. Notwithstanding the difficulties which the early settlers in these Islands huve encou'tered, the progress made in the development of Commerce has been very satisfactory — the returns of exports and imports exhibiting r.ipi'. expansion. The capabilities ol the lulands for sugar and cotton cultivation are of the very highest description, an , with the introduction of enpital and the means afforded to phmtera to turn their produce to account, there can ba no doubt that the above interests wilt be very speedily and largely increased. Already tracts of country have been secured by plantes from other sugarproducing countries, rhe climate and soil of Fiji offering superior advant ges. The European population is already considerable, and rnpidly increasing ; and the general dt sire to support law and order, and the putitl recognition of the Government b> Great; Britain, afford a reasonable ground for be'ievin^ that transactions in Fiji may be undertaken with safety, and with the same recourse as in more Stttled communities. Important concession?, including <m exclusive right to issue bank notes, and to transact all Government busiuens, arc under < f£ -r to the <Y>mpimy; and from duta furnished to the promoters, it is believed that a v; ry satisfactory return on the capital to be invested will be ensured. The scope of the Company's operations wi'l not be confined to Mji, but will embrace the numerous groups of islands in the P;icfie, as encouragement may from time to time effur.
