Fire. — The old residence of Mr E. Green, at the Sands, was totally destroyed hy fire laat night between 1 1 and 12 o'clock. The origin ia unknown. The houee which was occupied by the farm laborers was fully insured. Resident Magistate's Court. — James Dall, who has several times been remanded on a charge of vagrancy, was this morning sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, accompanied by a promise that on his next appearance he should have an opportunity of testing the gaol accommodation for three months. National Bank. — The premises now in the occupation of Mr Augarde, together with the unoccupied piece of ground adjacent to it, have been secured by tlie Natioual Batik aa a site for their brauch establishment io Nelson. The position is an excellent one, being about the most central in tho town. The price paid was, we believe, £1,500. Decimal Company.— Good news was received by this Company by the Lady Barkly, which arrived from Collingwood yesterday, the same leader, and equally rich with that from whence tho last crushing was obtained, having been struck at a distance of 140 feet from that portion of it which gave so handsome a yield. The engine for driving the battery is now over there, and waa to arrive on the ground to-day, and ir, is expected that crushing will commence in a week's time. Resignation of Mr Reid. —In a lengthy address to his constituents Mr Reid expresses his intention of retiring from the Provincial Council. He concludes as follows: — " I retire from the position in which you did mo the honor of placing me, entertaining tho hope that the importance of the interests of your district will induce you to elect for the future a more eligible representative, nnd enjoying the belief that there are other capacities than tbat. of a member of tbe Nelson Provincial Council in which, without any sacrifice of dignity, it is possible for a man to make himself useful in his day and generation." Mr Reid was one of the few members who never spoke unless he had something to say. He was always listened to with attention, and considerable weight was attached to his opiuions. He will be greatly missed in the Council. Pigeon Match. — A match between eitfht gentlemen from the town and a similar number from the country, seven birds each, has beeu talked of for some time, and was ultimately arranged to take place at Richmond to-day. As a healthy sign we may note that a Dunedin broker advertises, " Albiou Coal Company shares wanted to purchase." In reporting the proceedings at the opening of the Parliament, the Independent say 's: — " His Excellency was dressed in a gorgeous military costume ornamented with a profusion of gold lace. At his left hand was seated Lidy Fergusson, with something of the paleness of the lily in her countenance, ao if not in the enjoyment of robust health." The Inangahua Herald learns that recent investigation has led to the discovery of a new resource to the Buller district in
the form of considerable deposits of ironstone. Our contemporary correctly saya that, with extensive coal of superior quality already proved to exist in abundance and valuable iron ore, Westport is cortaiu to become a place of importance in the not very far distant future. The crushing plant, buildings, and working material, &c, of the United Band of Hope Quariz - raining Company, on Shiel's line of reef, at Murray Creek, were sold hy auction in one lot, at Keefton, on the 12th July, for £300. The purchaser was Mr Morris Levy, of Greymouth, who made his bid by telegraph. It was rumored in Reefton that the fortunate purchaser had refused an advance of £1,000 on his bargain.
