[Pes. Anglo- Austbaman Press Telegraph Agbnoy]. Wanganui, July 23. The schooner Meteor for Dunedin, went ashore on the south spit last night. She is likely to become a total wreck. The cargo of flour and grain can be landed, but will be badly damaged. Tbe pilot signalled to her to go to sea, but the vessel stood on. Wellington, July 23. The Post to-night says that ou the arrival of the Ladybird at Wellington, on Friday next, she will be placed on the patent slip for the purpose of fixing a new propeller considerably larger tban the present one. The Phcebe it is expected will take her place in the coastal trade. As soon ae the Ladybird is afloat again, the Phoebe will be permanently placed on the line between Sydney and Manukau, She will leave Sydney regularly on the third Tuesday of each month, connecting at Manukau with an interprovincial boat. Lyttleton, July 23. The Paterson sails at one o'clock; the Claud Hamilton at four, should the gale moderate, Tauranga, July 23. Tbe yield of the wheat harvest is expected to double that of last year. Wellington, July 24. Tbe Independent to-day says tbat the Government intend to propose a measure wbich will absolutely fix the right of provinces to borrow without the necessity of Parliamentary legislation. Each province is to be allowed to borrow money upon its own credit upon its own specific security, the colony not being liable for the interest and sinking fund of tbe debt. Papers relative to the proposed mail service between New Zealand and Melbourne have been published. They are to the following effect :— McMeckan, Blackwood & Co. will establish a service to and from Melbourne and Wellington, landing and receiving mails at Bluff, Port Chalmers, and Lyttelton, up and down for three years, for £5000 per annum. The down mails to be delivered at Bluff harbor within seven days, at Port Chalmers withia eight days, at Lyttelton within nine and a-half days, and at Wellington within ten and a-half days from the arrival of the P. and 0. steamer in Hobson's Bay. The steamer to remain at Melbourne if necessaiy for two days beyond the due date of the mail. The steamer with tho mails from New Zealand to Melbourne to be despatched from Wellington eleven days before the time of the departure of tbe P. and O. boat from Hobson's Bay, via Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and the Bluff, not less (ban six and a-half ciear days being given from the latter port to tranship at Melbourne. A supple mentary offer is made to convey ?tbe mails to and ftom Nelson, Greymouth, and Hokitika, landing and receiving at the two latter ports, weather permitting, •free of extra charge. The papers contain telegrams from Mr Macandrew conveying an offer from Daligety and Co to deliver tlie Suez maila inwards at the Bluff, Port Chalmers,
Lyttelton, Wellington, Nelson, Greymouth and Hokitika; to receive the outward mails from these ports beginning at Hokitika aDd ending at the Bluff, for three years, at £500 per month, wiihin 9^ days from Melbourne to Wellington, to be computed from twenty-four hours after the arrival of the Suez mail steamer, and witbin eleven days from Wellington to Melbourne. Further communications have been received that the last named service would be performed at the price of £5000 per annum, but it requires the sanction of Mesers M'Meckan and Blackwood. Dunedin, July 24. The Council last night decided to set apart 30,000 acres for settlement on deferred payments. Waikouaiti, July 24. Mr Gillies is returned by a majority of sixty. Hokitika, July 24. "' ; The County authorities have been served with a writ at the suit of the Hokitika and Greymouth Tramway Company, for a breach of the regulations under which the Company commenced operations.
