REPORT ON BRUNNER COAL RAILWAY.

Mr CARRUTHERSto the Hon. the Minister for Public Works. Sir, — Greymouth, December, 21, 1872. The working expenses of this line would be about £4,000 a year, and assuming the charges to be as high as on the Canterbury Railways, viz. 6dper ton per mile, it would require an output of about 23,000 tons of coal annually to pay working expenses. There can be no doubt but that this output will be reached as soon as the railway is open, and that the line will therefore pay working expenses. I do not think there willjbe muchTtraffio beyond the coal, as the line is so sho_fc that it will not pay carters to transfer goods for the up-country to the railway and back to their carts for the sake of the short railway journey. I have, &c, John Carruthers, Engineer-in-Chief. The Hon. the Minister for Public Works, Wellington.
