" THE SUPERINTENDENCE"
To the Editok op the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir, — Although you copied that very absurdly amusing paragraph from the Marlborough Express, you surely did not expect to frighten the people of Nelson City, The cackling of geese is said to have once saved old Rome; was the cackling of the Express intended to save Nelson? By a similar process of reasoning, should. Mr. Shephard be elected Superintendent, the capital of the Province will be removed to Fernhill; should Mr Gibbs be successful, then Collingwood will become a city; and should Mr Seymour be the lucky man, then may we expect that the " Seat of Government" will be transferred to Picton or Blenheim. It is time that Nelson (as the cackler has it) should "wake up with surprise at her own short-sightedness in the past" nine years. In the meantime thanks to the goose for this timely warning, and I trust that it will find some better employment than looking " forward to the J issue - of this business with some curiosity." ' ; Yours, &c, Quid-nunc.
