Wellington, July 11. The Independent says that Mr Stafford l^s- intimated his intention not to lead the Opposition, but simply to observe and criticise 'the actions of the Government.,. It throws the blame of the failure of immigration upon the Agent-General, who had ignored the instructions of the Government, and blames the Government for not dismissing him. t The Government b'ns resolved to nomi nate Mr Seymour, the Superintendent of Marlborough, as Chairman of Committees. Mr T. L. Sbephard was formerly mentioned as the probable chairman. Dunedin, July 12. The Provincial Government intend recommending an extension of the telegraphic stations throughout the province, i The rector of the High School asks to defend himself at the bar of the House. A motion in favor of his request was granted by a majority of six. Curistchurch, July 12. The Jockey Club has held a meeting to reconsider the disqualification of Peerpss. It was ultimately agreed to submit /fTTfe^ facts similar to those sent to the Aum,ral- S asian, to Admiral Rous for his bpinfon.
