Thk Rev Thomas Buddie wili preach in the Wesieyan Church, Hardy-slreet, to-morrow, morning and evening, Resident Magistrate's Court. — Dennis Allen, charged with using insultingand abusive language to his wife, was this morning bound over to keep the peace for three months, himself in £10, and two sureties in £5 each. Clifton Terrace Library. — The concluding lecture of the series will be delivered on Tuesday evening next, by the Rev. G. _. . Johnstone, tbe subject being "Reminiscences of Travel." After the lecture there will be a number of musical selections by amateur friends. Caledonian Society. - — We are glad to find that the success which attended the late entertainment given by this Society has induced them to advertise another for next Wednesday evening, when they may safely reckon .on a crowded house. Colonial Secretaryship.-— lt will be seen by our Wellington telegrams that Dr Pollen has beeu appoiuted Colonial Secretary in the place of Mr^Reynolds, resigned. This will strengthen the Government considerably, and is, probably, preparatory to Mr Reynolds being elected Chairman of Committees. Playing with Gunpowder. — An accident, which fortunately was not attended with such results as might have been expected, occurred at Happy Valley last night. A little boy, tbe son of Mr James Close, got hold of a flask of gunpowder and threw it on tbe fire, when of course an explosion followed, and the boy who had done* the mischief and two other children who were in the room at the time were mnch burnt. Young Men's Mutual Improvement Class. — The members of this class met at the Wesieyan Schoolroom last evening, when several new members joined, and Mr Moorhouse gave an address on the important subject of a sound mind in a sound body, which led to a very interesting conversation. This Society has been recently established, and as the object is to make good readers and clear thinkers we recommend it • t'6 the young men of Nelson. Wesleyan Church. — - The annual quarterly meeting was held on Tuesday evening, and on the following evening; the members of the congregation met, when Mr Lucas the circuit steward, read the financial statement showing the income to be. £121 Is 9d for the quarter, aDd the ordinary expenditure for the same period £123. There were a few more subscriptions to come in which would more than make up the deficiency. The expenses of removal, and of re-fittiug the house will be met by a sale of useful and fancy articles which the ladies of the congregation have undertaken to provide. The Oamaru paper eays that " the Harbour works at the Point are steadily progressing. Tho platform and ways have been laid for the steam crane, and the locomotive is now running on the tramway conveying shingle to the reclamation. The engine, which weighs five tons, is capable of drawing 50 tons at a speed of 20 miles an hour, and is jnst the sort of thing required for our light railways. It is inexpensive in first cost, and burns very little cbal." Dr. Wallendorf, a German, has fitted up a steamboat as a floating hospital for persons ill with pulmonary troubles, and will take his patients for a winter cruise between Malta and Gibraltar, on the Mediterranean Sea.
