7 Licensed Yictualleks.-— A. .general meeting of licensed victuallers will beheld at the Trafalgar Hotel this evening, ior the consideration of matters of importance. 7 Waimea Rifle Company. — The members of this Company are reminded that the monthly -inspection parade will take place on Saturday next at Waimea West, and not, as hitherto, at Spring Grove. Caledonian Society's Entbrtain-MENT.-r-It is according no little praise to the members of this Society to say tbat last night they gave the best entertain'ment, they have ever placed before the public, and their efforts were weli rewarded, a very large and most appreciative audience being assembled in the Provincial Hall,- in which a neat and tastefully fitted up stage had been; erected- fbr the occasion. Where all was so good it would take too long to refer in detail to every item on the programme that called forth the applause of the audience, but we may state our opinion that the songs ; " The Gloamin is coming," and " Where is now the merry party ? " both of which were most sweetly* sung, and the " Orpheus " glee were the musical gems of the evening. A comic reading, consisting of a domestic scene in a language that was not that of England, was givpn with great gusto by a gentleman who always contrives to invest his readings with- immense spirit and humor. . "The last days of Herculaneum " was recited in a. manner that fairly took the audience by surprise*, Both elocution and. expression were perfect, and, the gentleman to' whom this portion .of the programme was, entrusted could not have needed any more v convincing proof of the pleasure be was giving to his hearers than the breathless silence and fixed attention with Which they listened to him. A capital little orchestra did their share of the performance exceedingly well, and the scenes from .-" Rob Roy " in. character were famously acted, as was . shown ;by the loud .applause with which they were greeted. Tbe Society are to be sincerely; congratulated on the success of last night's perfor-? mance, as are the public of Nelson on the fact that there are among them those who are able and williog to originate* and carry through so creditable an entertainment. Do you Like Lottie ?— Reader, this is a.more serious question than appears at first sight, for the Nelson public has been gravely told this morning, that if it does not like the fair gymnast, it cannot be an admirer of the Nelson Daily Examiner, as between the lightly clad lady and the heavy columns of that journal there exists some strange mysterious affinity. Now, not to be an admirer of the Nelson Ddily Examiner, after the brilliant, sparkling, witty, humourous article that this morning graced its columns argues that a man must indeed be wanting in taste, or that that which he does possess is bad and depraved in the lowest degree, so you see to what a charge you lay yourself open if you do nbt like Lottie. Had we not been assured yesterday that the Nelson Daily Examiner was to be-" under the editorial charge of a gentleman possessed of ability and experience," we should have supposed that the article writer had served . his [ apprenticeship in the advertising department. of Moses & Son's well-known clothing mart, and had made the best use of his time in Btadying and learning to iniitate the peculiar style bf literature affected by ' gentlemen of that profession. Let anyone read the Examiner of seven or eight years ago and the Examiner of Thursday, July 3, 1873, and with a" deep-drawn. s^-Jbev will exclaim "How are the ibigfe^ ■fallen !" "- : " ■ " *"' • ""'-?**&■< A Stbange Case.— Some six months ago , a lunatic was sent up from: the

For several weeks past the butchers have complained that. *theifc slaughter-houses Have [been ribbed] and it is now supposed that the thief is secured. He ia at present in the lockup in the state in which he, waa found, namely, almost naked, and with a long growth of- nails anj hair. r- : , .
