The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 1873.
It will be remembered that, in the last'session of the Assembly, an'attempt was made to slice off the the western territory of the Province of Nelson, with the -view of amalgamating it with the model County of Westland, the arguments in favor of such a proceeding, being, . of course, that it would tend to the better government of the mining districts. That kind hearted, benevolent, and impartial politician, Mr Fox, was the instigator of the -attractive scheme. In him it lived and moved and had its being. It would be uncharitable even to hint that the hostility of the 'then Premier to the ''"Superintended t of Nelson had anything to do with the' earnest rnanjner in which he ; took the matter up and pleaded the cause, of the « neglected -.dwellers on .the.,, West Qoast,- Let= us 'rai, her suppose ; that) be bad devoted? much study to the- 'subject, and after carefully considering; all the ; pros^and, cons, had arrived at the, conclusion . ttiat,.the great panacea for all the ills to which the diggers, storekeepers, and goJdfields camp followers were exposed was release from the rule of Nelson- and the" power "fo~ govern themselves;; It is 3 treasonable* to 'suppose that Mr Fox had carefully kept his eye upon the proceedings of the County Councillors and members of • t! otHe'r public bodies in W^stlan'df^nd that he felfr himself justified in believing that the success that had: attended this Solitary ibstance bf gpldfields ' sfel^go.vernment'.wßS; B,uch; as .to. lead to i a desire to encourage the spread of similar, institutions. Perhaps Mr Fox,; with the knowledge he then , possessed, was right. We merely desire to say. .t^at... these remarks are intended simply r asja ; preface to a quotation v?~e wish to !li make from, a Hpkitika paper. The JYestlafkd Register of a receuit date, in commenting upon the; public men and bodies in the County, says:. —Our Councils, our. committees, and public bodies of every : descriptions, are falling into the .hands and under the guidance of men who haye ido business what, ever to show themselves in the front rank: at all. Boisterous, incompetent, and, unprincipled, they are everywhere, and erelong we'shall bitterly rue their presence. Already- institutions and corporations fire falling into disorganisation and disrepute from no other causes than those we have indicated, the paucity of good and the; multiplicity of unfit men who are members of them. Against these evils what is the remedy? It is a simple one, but one which demands self-sacrifice and discomfort on the part of those who apply it. It is for the respectable, substantial, and educated men to come -forward and pit themselves against the talkative, loafing demagogues, who by dint of brass usurp all offices of trust and responsibility. It is for them to endure the pain and ridicule of, for a moment, putting themselves on a. level with stump speakers and bar politicians, and endeavoring to drive them back to their proper obscurity." Beyond commending the above extract to the notice of Mr Fox, we do not feel • called upon, to say anything more on the matter. We should like him; to observe that in the County of Westland "stump speakers and bar . politicians " carry the day against '" respectable, substantial, and educated men." :.' ■•' -~-:-.
