June 19.—Joseph Ward & Company have been appointed agents for the Osborn, Wallsend, and Mount Pleasant Collieries at Woollongong. The Victoria sails for Auckland to-day. Captain Moresby, of HM.S. Basilisk, has taken possession, in the Queen's namei of New Guinea.' Adelaide wheat active at 5s lid to 6s. The old pensioners propose to form a body guard for the Governor. AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY, The Sydney and Brisbane Governments finally decline the Suez proposals. Both agree to a Califomian and Torres Straits temporary service. The first begins in January. The Government, having over-ridden the judgment of the Chief Court of Mines rs claims jumped at Stawell, both parties are expected to come to blows. Two hundred shepherds have armed and hold the claims against the jumpers. The Government position in this matter is critical. M'Bain's motion of want of confidence on the Postal contract is pending. A similar motion re the Waterworks policy is tabled. A Permissive Bill is to be introduced. Dr Mueller has been appointed Government botanist, at a salary of £800. M'Kenzie, the coal viewer of New South Wales, is inspecting the Victorian coal seams. . The farmers are demanding assisted immigration. . -* Goodwin, the ledger keeper of the Colonial Bank, pleaded guilty, and is remanded for sentence, for defrauding the Bank out of £10,700. In the great squatting property case of Degraves versus M'Mullen, Inspector of the Union Bank, a verdict was given for the plaintiff for £10,200. The first shipment of Harrison's frozen meat goes by the Norfolk in July. Tasmanian hops are shipping to India.
