Dangers of the Game of Polo-A
letter from Sealkbts relates a sad occurrence at that station. A game of polo was being played. Lieutenants Baker, of the sth Lancers, and Churchill, of the 58th Foot, were both riding hard at the ball, when they cannoned against each other. Men and horses went down as if they hud been shot, aud both riders were picked up insensible; but poor Baker never spoke again, and died three days afterwards. Lieut. J. Carpenter, of "the Buffs," has lost his life at Benares, also while playing •at polo. Diiring. the game his pony came into collision with one ridden by Lieut. Gruise, a brother officer. Lieutenant Carpenter was thrown, and, falling on his head, died almost immediately. The that "it may perhaps , be .considered time to question the good sense of ; all who share the responsibility of : keeping .up a game which, whatever its merits as -an amusement, has cost the Queen's service in India two gallant officers ia as many months.'*
