The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1873.

A Steamer, supposed to be the Rangitoto, from Melbourne, was signalled as we went to press. Vagrancy. — James Dall, charged with vagrancy, was this morning sentenced to one month's imprisonment. Christ Church.— The parishioners are reminded that the election of three SynOdsmen for the parish of Christ Church will take place at the Bishop's Schoolroom, to-morrow evening, at 7 o'clock. Lodger Franchise. — A petition to the General Assembly in favor of extending the franchise to lodgers is being largely signed in Wellington. Would ifc not be as well if a step in the same direction were made in Nelson ? Artizans' Association. — One of those popular entertainments, for which the Nelson Artizans are so justly celebrated, will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall, tomorrow evening. An excellent programme has been prepared, and a pleasant evening may be looked for by the public, and a crowded audience by tbe performers. The Lottie Magnet Troupe are still performing with marked success. Tonight and Saturday evening will be the only opportunities of seeing the astonishing feats of Lottie and her brothers, as there will be no performance to-morrow evening on account of the Artizans' entertainment, and on Monday the company will sail for Auckland in the Wellington. The Dart. — Some fears have been entertained about the safety of this vessel; but Mr Simms, master of the Pearl, reports that he saw the Dart at Kapiti Island, having twice attempted to enter Patea, for which place she was bound. The Pearl had a very rough passage, and was out in tbe recent gale, in which a brig was seen to go down. Supplementary Estimates. —Unless the session of the Council is brought to a speedy close, or the members become more moderate in their demands, the supplementary are likely to equal, if not to exceed, the original estimates. Already some thousands of pounds have been placed on the former, and the Order Papers for to-night contains notices that nearly £1300 more are to be asked for. At the same time no corresponding reductions have been made in the estimates as sent down, and the consequence will be that, as usual, the Council will have agreed to an expenditure of several thousand pounds in excess of the probable, not to say the possible, revenue.
