THE ATTACK UPON MR MACKAY.
The following particulars of a conversation between Mr Mackay and a native chief, regarding the conduct of Mr C; O. Davis, -have 'been officially reported to the Government, :—. Hopa: Not at all. • It was !he; that set Nuku against yoa. . When Nuku came to my place on the day after the last meeting at Mangatautari. I enquired " Has Davis been? to Te Kuiti ? " Nuku answered " Yes,'' and, Davis askcd^rae '/has Mackay been here ? ' I replied ' Yes.' Davis then said . • Mackay is a deceitful man, he is a tangata kohuru '-(a ; base plotter). It was he that took . the lands at Hauraki (Thames) from the natives, and his also is the taking of Ngotihuaua. If he is allowed to come to Te Kuiti, he will deprive you of : land. . -published, a document against the, Arawas, and s^idt^ey, should^ be sent to Hawaki; \rx\ Pai i Mairire fashion. I Mr r JMEackay,-: ,-., I never had anything to doiwitbhtheHauraki elands, excepting in opening them for mining, and purchasing them for -the Government. As for Ngatihaura, I never bought or leased any of the lands. It has' alio 'been reported by a gentleman travelling inland, near Taupo, that Mr Davis has been speaking in a disgraceful manner to tbe : natives, respecting Mr Mackay, telling; themnot to believe anything he 6ays. 1 ;.,,..'
