The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, MAY 30, 1873.
Cattle Trespass. — Mrs Macdonald was this morning charged with allowing her cows to trespass on the roads. Two informations were laid, and defendant was fined 6s and 13s costs. Nelson and West Coast Eailway. — We call attention to the report which appears elsewhere of the proceedings in the Council last uight. The crowded slate of our columns prevents our makiDg any remarks upon the discussion, but we eh-i.ll refer to it to-morrow. Bankruptcy. — The Gazette of this morning coutains a notification that George Jacobs, lodging house keeper, lms filed a declaration of his inability to meet his engagements with his creditors. — Also that the first meeting of the creditors of James Lucas, tailor, will be held on Thursday next. Decimal Company.—- Some rich specimens, obtained from the Perseverance Company's end of the Decimal mine, are on view at the store of Messrs Buxton and Co., and. are well worth inspection. Stone is now being taken out from this portion of the mine and crushed at the Perseverance battery, and if it is anything like equal to the specimens, the crushing should prove a fabulously rich one. We recently received a telegram stating that the Independent had made an attack on the Registration Officer at Nelson for disfranchising 170 persons on the West Cor st. Our Wellington contemporary was, as iB frequently the case in its references to Nekon, entirely in the wrong, Mr Broad having nothing whatever to do with the electoral roll alluded to. Fire. — At 12 o'clock last night the bells rung out the alarm, which speedily produced the usual results in the shape of people in strange costumes suddenly appearing in the street?, and the barking of all the dogs in tbe town. Flames were soon seen breaking out from tbe back premises of Mr Balrae's coach factory, but fortunately the fire was discovered so early that tho private hose attached to the house did all that was necessary. The Fire Brigade turned out with their customary smartness, but on this occasion their services were not required. Star Combination Company. — This company gave tbeir last performance at the Masonic Hall, on Wednesday evening last, when Herr Norberg took his benefit. The House was moderately well filled, and the, programme was carried out in a most satisfactory manner. Miss Tilly Andrews was in good voice and sang her sentimental and serio-comic songs in a thoroughly artistic manner. Mr Arthur Vivian is inimitable in his character songs, and ranks highly as a comique. Tho serio-comic duetts between Miss Andrews and Mr Vivian must be heard to be appreciated, as they possess all the charms of novelty and originality. Mr Harry Simmons, as a motto songster, is thoroughly proficient, and renders his songs in a masterly style. A Chinese sketch, by Mr Burton, was most amusing, and kept the audience laughing from commencement] to finish^ The comediettas of tho " Happy Pair " and "* Who Speaks First" were creditably performed throughout, and brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
