CORRESPONDENCE.

*** We are desirous of affording every reasonable facility for the discussion of public subjects; but it mußt,be understood that yre are in no way responsible fof tlie opinions expressed by correspondents. " To the Editor op the Nelson Eybning Mail. Sir, — I see somebody bas been repeating in your columns the often made but silly suggestion that the salaries of all Government officers in the receipt ,of over £200 a year should be reduced by) 10 per cent. Why £200 a year.?. -Why 10 per cent ? Is it because they are nice round numbers;: that slip glibly out of the mouth and from the pen without beipg necessarily prompted by thought dr reaisbn. If J think that $30 pay Joe. fairly. ; e,truck off the Superintendent's palary (which I do not) am I to bind myself to tbe opinion that some poor clerk on. the West Coast, who with a wife and family is struggling hard to keep himself in some degree of comfort and respectability on £250 a year, ought to be deprived of £25 ? . The amount of nonsense that is spoken and written about the salaries of Government officers is incalculable. ... Where is the mercantile house or banking. establishment that would be constantly threatening to reduce the pay of its employes ? With what heart would you expect that, if such were the case, those servants would work-' for their employers ? Why then should Government officers be: subjected to such perpetual worrying and bullying ? lam glad to find, Sir, that you have set your face against a cry which is so stupid ip itself, and yet always finds favor with a few who do not take the trouble to bestow a thought on the matter. I am, &c, ■i Fairplat.
