Last Night's Council.— The Council met at 5 o'clock. On tbe motion of Mr Shephard, it was resolved :— "That in tbe opinion of this Council it is desirable that the line of telegraph be extended from Nelson to the Lyell' district." They had already passed a resolution affirming the desirability of connecting the Lyell* with Reefton, and if it were extended on this side it would be another and a better line than that already existing by way of Canterbury. — On the motion' of Mr C, Kelling, the memorial of settlers in Stanley Brook was referred to the Petitions Committee. The Council then adjourned until this morning. To-day's Council. — There was a short sitting of the Provincial Council this forenoon, the notice paper containing only, one question and one motion. Tho ques- ; tion was asked by Mr Donne, and was to this effect :-— " What steps, if any, are: taken by the Government to give effect to a resolution of the Council passed oni Monday, May 5, affirming . the desirability. of amending the representation Act."; The Provincial Secretary replied that; it was not the intention of the Govern-' ment to take any steps in the matter until; more definite information was given by! the Council, as the Government did not admit tbat there was any disparity in the representation of tbe settled, districts and the goldfields. — The motion that was discussed was that which had, at a previous sitting; been proposed by Mr Guinness, viz.: — "That, in the opinion of. this Council, it is desirable that tbe Provincial Government should obtain the co- ; operation of the Government of the; County of Westland for purchasing the 1 Arnold bridge." Mr Tarrant, for" Mr Donne, moved, as an amendment, " That, in the opinion of this Council, it is. desirable that the Provincial Government • should ascertain upon what terms the Arnold bridge can be purchased, and * report to the Council at an early date." ' The motion was seconded by Mr Reid, accepted by Mr Guinness, and agreed to. *
