Life Assurance. — We call attention to the lecture on life insurance to be delivered by Mr Thomson at the Masonic Hall this evening. Steamer Wallace.— The departure of this boat has been postponed till tomorrow at 10 a.m., in consequence of the heavy sou'- west gale on the Coast. Volunteer Artillery Company. — A meeting of this Company was held on Saturday evening, at the Drill Shed, when the members present were sworn in. 1 Mr Albert Pitt was then duly elected Captain, but it was determined to postpone the appointment of junior officers for one month. Several names were proposed to' form a committee of seven, in accordance with the rules passed ; and the ballot will take place on Wednesday evening next, as advertised, when it will be necessary for all intending members to attend to be sworn in, as after that date, all new names will require to be balloted for. There, seems every probability of the company having a good start, the Government having promised to supply two 12-pbunder Armstrong guns, and two sets of arms for drill and rifle practice. The members are subscribing £2 each in part payment of uniform. The present band have offered to give their services gratuitously, provided they are supplied with uniforms, and this the company hope to be able to do, and also to secure the services of a professional conductor. Inland Communication Committee.— The suggestion made in the Council by Mr Greenfield that o conference should take place between the Goldfields members and the Inland Communication Committee was acted, upon on Saturday night, and is likely to lead to highly satisfactory results. A more complete understanding was thus arrived at than could possibly be hoped for from communication by letter or from debates in the Provincial Council. It was fully explained to the West Coast representatives that the object of the Gompany was, not to interfere with the rights ofthe, miners and to place them at the mercy of the Company, but rather to encourage them to pursue their avocations, and to offer inducements to others to come by the increased facilities that -would *he afforded by a railway for obtaining the necessaries of life. There are of course many details that have yet to be entered into, but it is a matter for congratulation that a better understanding has been arrived at, and that the West Coast representatives will be able to carry hack with them a far different and more favorable impression with regard to the objects of the Company than that with which they arrived here, and which no doubt. prevails throughput the miniDg districts at the present moment. •
