RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
("Before Lowtheb Bboad, Esq., RM.) William Berry, a lad of about nine years of age, was charged with stealing 27s in silver from the store of William Phillips, in Bridge-street. The case having been clearly proved, the Besident Magistrate asked the lad, Do you go to school ? Prisoner : I went once, but do not now. His Worship : Do you go to church or chapel ? Prisoner : No, never. His Worship : lam afraid you are a wicked bad boy, as it is quite clear that you stole this money from Mf Phillips, but I blame your parents too, who seem to have brought you up without the slightest knowlege of your duty to God or man. It would be useless, and perhaps wrong to send a child like you to herd with, convicted felons, but I am bound to punish you, and I shall do so by ordering you to \,be detained in the gaol for 24 hours, and during that time to be soundly whipped under the eye of the Hospital surgeon. 71-Jara oniy^sorry; ihaithere is no Reformatory to Which yoii- might Tbeleent^.
