SUBURBS ELECTION.
To THBfEDITOK OF THE NELSON EVENING MAIL Sib, — It was not without considerable pain that I read Mr Elliott's address, in -which he offers himself as a candidate for the seat rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Richardson. As an old Nelson settler I cannot but en'ertain a certain amount of sympathy and kind'y feeling, towards one who has shared with me the hardships and vicissitudes that have to be passed through hy those who undertake the colonisation of a new country, and it is in this friendly spirit that I venture to offer a word of warning to him who is now soliciting our votes. We of the suburbs may differ in our political opinions, but I vienture to say that we shall be unanimous in requiring that our representative shall be sans reproche In a contested election there is always a deal of mud flying about, but unless some affinity exists betweenlt-he substance thrown and the object at which it is aimed there is no fear of its sthking. In the present instance, however, I am afraid that the candidate to whom I allude will come out of the fray in a most sorry plight, and for this reason I would invite him to withdraw before it is too late. He has not the remotest chance of beins elected, while he is certain .to be the subject of such remarks as no man in his senses would voluntarily expose himself to. By writing in this strain I may lay myself open to a charge of uhcharit'ableness, but it is iwith ihe hope of inducing .Mr Elliott to avoid the fate he seems to court that I so openly express an opinion' which I am quite convinced is shared by the large msjority of the electors. "He ranat be mad to think of. such a thing " is the exclamation I hear on all sides, and if he persists in his attempt to force himself upon us, I- shall: certainly be a convert to the faith that finds expression in the words Quern Dens vultperdereprius dementat, '■:■ ;'\ :l amj-ic,,', .'.;•■• *," .'• .■',"' '.
