South Bbitish Insurance Company. — We understand that ihe number of Shares applied for in Nelson of the new issue of thie Company amounted to- 2617. The Share list closed at noon to-day. Nelson Fife and Drum: Band.— A full attendance of the members of this band is requested at the Volunteer Hall this evening, at 8 o'clock. Business of importance. ' Life Assurance.— Mr W. A. Thomson, the lecturer of tho Australian Mutual Provident Society, is compelled, by a death in his family, to postpone his lectures in Nelson and outlying districts until his return from Auckland in about a ■week. Nelson and West Coast Eailway. — His Honor the Superintendent bas appointed a committee of the following gentlemen :— Messrs. C. Y. Fell, Wm. Stavert, Robert Burn, Thomas Mackay, and Charles Elliott, to organize tbe arrangements for the ceremony of "turning tbe first sod" of tbe railway at Stoke, on Wednesday, the 30th instant. Fatal Accident. — A sad accident occurred at Stoke on Saturday last, ■when a little girl named Annie Kenning, two years of age, was crushed to death by a barn door falling upon ber. An inquest ■was held in the evening, when a verdict •was returned in accordance with the evidence, which will be published in our tomorrow's issue. St. Michael's Church. — Subscription lists towards defraying the expenses of replacing the windows in St. Michael's Church have been opened at the shops of Messrs J. Hounsell and H. D. Jackson, ■who have kindly consented to receive any small contributions that may be offered for this purpose.
