"RICHMOND ALLEY."
To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail Sir, — I was much surprised when reading Tuesday's Mail to find that a remonstrance had been ma*3e by Mr. O'Connell to the Waimea Road Board, trying to s prevent soil being taken from his land. This is a great mistake, it has nothing to do with Mr. Q"C6hnell. . TKe soil spoken of is to he taken from a steep bank in the public road so as to make it easier of ascent, thereby killing two birds with. one: stone. ■« Tie soil taken away would lower the hill and fill up'a very large and dangerous ditch in the Alley, which is almost impassable at present. The work is now going on well, and I believe the Road Board will have the credit of having done their duty this time in not taking notice of this cantankerous remonstrance. If ,Mr O'Connel could have got the contract no complaint would then have been made. But like the dog in. the manger he cannot eat this steep hill, therefore he would try and prevent the whole neighborhood from going up or down, and also leave the Alley in a wretched- and dangerous state. The Board of. Works have agreed to make a thorough good piece of work this time ; everything will be done satisfactorily if left alone by meddlesome folks. ; . /** ' . lam,&c, Progress.
