Alpine Company.— From a private telegram received yesterday evening, we learn that the Alpine Company's last crushing of seventy tons yielded fiftythree ounces without cleaning the plates. We notice a sale of shares on Tuesday next, at Mr H. J. L. Augarde's rooms, of reefs and claims in the valuable and important Lyell district. There are some remarkably rich specimens on view, and if apything is required to excite enterprise in the mining world, the stone alluded to is calculated to do so. Temperance Hall. — Dr. Carr made bis debut in Nelsoh last night as a temperance speaker. The children of the Band of Hope, with their parents and friends crowded the Temperance Hall. Three cheers were heartily accorded to the lecturer. Mr. Crisp's magic lantern' afforded the usual fund of amusement and delight to all present. Baptist Chapel Richmond. — The Union Sunday School Anniversary Services will be held in the above chapel tomorrow, in the afternoon by the Rev. P. Calder, in the evening by Mr. W. M. Biss. In aid of the above a public tea will ba provided at the Institute on the Tuesday following, after which a public meeting will be held at the chapel, at halfpast six o'clock. Parish of Christ Chubch. — A well attended meeting of the parishioners of Christ Church was held at the Bishop's schoolroom last night to take into consideration the financial condition of the parish. The chair was taken by Dr Scaly, who opened the proceedings by reading a letter from the Rev G. H. Johnstone, in which he stated that he was about to forward to the Yen. Archdeacon Butt, the Bishop's Commissary, by the earliest opportunity, his resignation of the Incumbency of Christ Church. The letter evoked a most friendly expression of respect and regard for Mr Johnstone, -who has for nine years been the Minister of the parish, and, on the motion of Mr. Fell, a Committee was appointed to prepare a suitable address to be presented to him prior to his leaving the scene of .his labors in September next. The immediate business of the meeting was then proceeded with, and on tbe motion of Dr. Boor it was resolved that a permanent subscription list be opened to meet the present liabilities of the Church. Over £20 was subscribed in the room, and a Committee was appointed to canvass the parish for further assistance towards paying off the arrears of the minister's stipend. It was stated during the last session of the Assembly that Otago was making all the haste to sell her waste lands,, A committee was appointed to inquire into the statement. An area of 50,000 acres had been sold "to meet the expenditure of the votes (provincial) in appropriation." A fair price was obtained for the land. The committee reported, " That as to the policy of disposing of land in large blocks, the committee are clearly of opinion that it ifi not to the interest of the . province, or the colony, that sales Bbould be allowed to take place, as in the present instance, and that upon any sale of land, of whatever description, the opportunity should be given to the whole public of competing."
