PUBLIC MEETING AT WAIMEA WES T .
0 A well-attended meeting of the inhabitants of Waimea West, was held on Tuesday night at the Village Schoolroom, to give expression to the feelings of indignation with which they had. heard of the late outrage at St Michael's Church. The chair was taken by the Rev. John Spear, who acted on behalf of the Rev. C. 0. Mules, the minister of the district, who was prevented by illness from attending. The Chairman having explained the object of the meeting, expressed his conviction, based upon personal knowledge of the locality, that the outrage would uot be traced to a resident in the village, and this conviction was strengthened by the presence that evening of so large a number of the inhabitants, some of whom oame from the extreme limits of the district. He regretted the painful circumstance which brought them togther, but he was glad to see the warm outburst of feeling which; that circumstance had called forth aod indeed, it was as much to give them that, opportunity, which they had so greatly desired, as for any other, tbat Mr Mules had decided on calling the meeting. Mr Challis, Churchwarden of St. Michael's Church, then proposed the first resolution, " That this meeting desires publicly to express its deep abhorrence of the crime committed on last Saturday night, the 29th of March, when the windows of St Michael's Church were broken; by some person unknown." This motion having been seconded by; Mi* Labchin was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. It was proposed by Mr Wm. Deon, seconded by IS/Lr Thorbukn, and carried uhabimously, •' That with the view of tracing this outrage to its source, this meeting respectfully requests the Government to offer a substantial reward for such information as may lead to the conviction. of the offender." ; ,",'-.. And, as a rider to this, it was proposed from the chair, "That Mr Inspector Shallcrass be requested to take charge of this resolution and submit it to the Government." v It was then proposed by Mr Dron, and seconded by Mr F.
