of a complimentary character.. The company 'present oni the ground and at the luncheon . included some" of the most prominent noblemen and country gentle- . men of the, north. Many of the Holker Hall herd are of the most fashionable blood, viz., the Oxford, Wild Eyes, .Bareington, andßlajnch-e tribes. No Oxford females bred :in England (except Lady Oxford sth) have been offered by auction since Mr Tanqueray's sale in 1855, when Oxford llth and 16th, own sisters to Oxford 15th (from which those now offered for sale are descended), were sold for 500 and 480' guineas^ respectively.; A few descend , from'Mr R*.; Colling's celebrated cow Princess. Sires inheriting the Kirklevington blood of the highest order and merit have been used, such as the pure Bates bull, Lord Oxford (20214), .Grand Duke 10th (21848), and Grand Duke 17th (24064), a son of the celebrated prize winner, Lady Oxford sth. Total Guineas ... 9509 The sale was a very good one, and some fancy prices were paid. Thirty heifers brought no less a sum that 7273g5., or an average of a little over 242*|gs. each, while the bulls brought 2236g5., or an average of a trifle over 203gs. each. The highest price brought by a heifer was 1005g5., and tbe highest by a bull, a mere calf under twelve months old, was just a net lOOOgs. The price of the heifer, Grand Duchess of Oxford 18th, bought by Mr Fair, acting for Earl Bective, is the largest ever paid for a shorthorn in this country in public competition; and the price of the bull, Duke of Oxford 20th, was only-equalled in 1810, when Comet was sold by auction for exactly the same sum. Grand Duchess of Oxford 7th was bought by Lord •Penrhyn for 915gs. r and Winsome 2nd by Earl Bective for 355g5. The Rev. P. Grahame -ji'aid the fancy price of 610gs. for Grand Duchess of Oxford 16th. The total proceeds of the sale were 9509g5.
