CHAMPION BELTS.- . The next item on the programme was the presentation of the Champion Belts, but these have not yet arrived from England. Temporary substitutes however had been provided in the shape of silken belts, and these were now presented by Mrs A. Richmond. The two champions for 1873 having been called on to the dais, Trooper Douglas was ordered to step forward, when' Mrs Richmond addressed him in the following words: — Trooper Douglas—l congratulate yon on winning the Cavalry Champion Belt, and I hope that the same good fortune may attend yoa at the next annual meeting, which will secure •to you the permanent possession of this coveted prize. Mrs Richmond having placed on his shoulders a scarlet silken belt and attached to it the silver medal, Douglas retired, and his place was occupied by Lieutenant Hoskin, who was addressed, by Mrs Richmond as follows::— Lieutenant Hoskin—l have very great pleasure in presenting you with this belt, as a token that you have gained the highest

I have been given to understand that the scoring in the contest for the championship has been higher this year than on any previous occasion. I think that this furnishes a proof of the improvement which has taken place in the firing, and reflects great honor not only on yourself but on all the competitors. * Mrs Richmond then presented to Lieut. HosMn a blue silken belt, when Major Richmond called for three cheers for the the champions, which was replied to in -the heartiest manner by the volunteers and the crowd of spectators by whom they were surrounded. On taking their places again in the ranks, the champions were greeted with a loud and prolonged clapping of hands from their brother volunteers, the representatives from the North and South. vieing with each other in their congratulatory demonstration towards the crack shots of the meeting of 1873. EXTEA PRIZES. The distribution of the extra prizes was now proceeded with by Major Richmond. The first of these were for those of the representatives, who had composed the winning team in the <*' NORTH AND SOUTH ISLAND MATCH. Snider rifles were presented to the victors in this match, all of whom, with the exception of Private Ross of Westland, were Otago men, namely; Ensign Richardson, Private Clode, Sergeant Henderson, Private- Ross, Sergeant D. Buchanan, Lieutenant Pell, CorporalAdam, Lieutenant Douglas, P. O. Wilson, and Lieutenant Sband. The highest scorer in each team, Ensign Richardson of the South, and Private Grundy of the North Island, received £5 each, while to Ensign Richardson, the highest scorer in tbe winning team, was awarded : the handsome silver Challenge Cup, which will become his absolute property if won by him two years in succession or three years at intervals. This was presented to the fortunate winner by Mrs Richmond, who said .* — 'Ensign Richardson — In presenting you with this cup, which yoii have won in the natch between the North and South Islands, you must allow me to congratulate you upon being the only Southern representative who has gained a prize in the contest for the championship.
