WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
Tuesday, March 4. The Board met at the Bridge Hotel. All the members were present except Mr Holland. The overseer's report was as follows : —The road from Harman's corner to the River Terrace school has been repaired j £7 10s has been expended here in carting, besides the time of the day labor man. A similar sum of £9 has been spent on the Wai-iti Valley road by the finger-post; also £2 15s in Eve's Valley. The bridge by Mr Bell's, swamp road, has been repaired. The probable cost of forming a road, 26ft wide, in Pigeon Valley, to Stanley Brook, would be 15s per chain. There are about 80 or 90 chains of unformed road on the main south line between the Wai-iti, by Mr Blower's, and the foot of Eay's saddle; there are also two new bridges required. Specifications for-lowering the hill in Rickett's Valley have been drawn ©ut, and the work let to Messrs Sharp and Higgins for the sum of £6 15s. I should recommend that tenders be invited for gravelling about 20 chains of road, in Spring Grove, opposite Mr Andrews'., Resolved : " That tenders be invited for gravelling by Mr Andrews', and for continuing the formation of the Stanley Brook road." Resolved : " That application be made to the Superintendent to request the Governor to make an order directing that the provisions of the second part of Public Health Act, 1872, be put in force in the Waimea Road Board district." Several tenders were accepted. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Moutere Board stating that the Board, while regretting the resolution of the Waimea Board, accept it as a settlement of the question, and that the work on the Moutere side has been laid out. The Surveyor was directed to peg out the line on the Waimea side, and invite tenders for the next meeting. It was resolved that application be made to the Government to make certain alterations along the line of the railway, at points where it will intersect a ditch on Mr Wood's land, and one contemplated by the Board on Mr Holdaway's land for improving the drainage of the main road. The first instalment of £130 on account of the grant under the Payment to Provinces Act, 1872, has been paid in. It was found that it would {not be advisable to adhere to the line of road from Thorpe to Orinoco, blazed some time ago. The Overseer, who reported having examined the portion in the Waimea district, which he estimated would cost £105 to form, was directed to meet Mr Tarrant. Mr Kelling was considered entitled to £80 as compensation for work done in forming and gravelling a road and keeping it in passable order for so many years. The Surveyor reported that on the line cut by Mr B. Fairhall, the rise would be about 10 feet per chain. The Board directed that a more favorable line should be blazed so that it may be surveyed. A letter Was received from the Provincial Secretary, enclosing a letter from Mr Rose, of Thorpe, and a memorial from the residents in and about Dovedale, against the proposed road through Mr Creswell's land; also Mr Tarrantfs estimate of the cost of making these roads, viz, 15s per chain for the level portions, and £35 to £40 for lowering steep places and filling up on the present road, and ±10 for banks on the proposed road: also that there is a probability of damage from, floods on both roads. Subscriptions, amounting to £8 ss, for improving the road along Richmon d Valley, were offered, and it was resolved that the work should be undertaken, estimated at £12 12s. Complaint having been made concerning the position of the telegraph wire on Greig's Hill, it was resolved — " That the Secretary represent to the officer in charge of the line of telegraph from Nelson to Motueka the inconvenience arising from the wire passing nearly over the centre of the road, at too slight an elevation, at a certain point on G-reig's Hill."
