Mr. Richmond's motion to increase the salary of the second assistant at Haven "Road school from £24 to £48 was carried after a,division w ~ Mr Richmond haying moved that the ealary of the assistant at the town prepara- •'' ifbry sbhpol be increased from £27 to £36, it was * re^oived, orr ~ thb'' motion of Mr Shephabd, that the consideration of all questions of increase of salary be deferred until after the meeting of the Provincial "'Council. I''--"'l''--"' •.;-.'■•'; The first paragraph of the report of the. . Committee appointed, to consider..the desirability of making changes in .7 the Education Act was discussed, when-Mr Greenfield moved " that it is not desirable to interfere- with the present Education Act." It wad resolved, after a division, that the first paragraph of the report, referring to the appointment of teachers be adopted. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Dencker, that, in the opinion of the Board, the appointment of teachers should still rest with the Local Committees, but that Committees should fill up vacancies in future from a list of competent teachers submitted to them by the Board. The second paragraph of the report, which reads thus—" Your Committee would also recommend> that the 37ihclause of the Act of 1863 should be. repealed. Experience has convinced your Committee that no religious instruction whatever, can be said to be -free from all controversial character.' They are however fully alive to the advisability of affording to the clergy and to ' other members of the various religious denominations every reasonable facility for instructing the children according to the wishes and views of their parents. It is accordingly recommended that ihe use of the schoolrooms should be granted out of school hours to any person or persons wbo may profess to he anxious to communicate such instruction, provided that due security is given for the safety of the property of the Board, and: for the necessary cleansing of the premises," the adoption of which was moved by Mr Shephard -^-was then discussed, and after a division adopted. Ayes 13—Simmons, Wastney, Rout, Smith, Bell, Burn, Rose, Garin, Cresswell, Shannon, Jessop, Shephard. Richmond. Noes s.—Dencker, Talbot, Thorpe, Campbell, Watkins. Resolved, That provision is required in the Education Act for members of the. Board retaining their until the appointments of their successors have been notified to the secretary. Mr Dencker having moved that a compulsory attendance clause be added to the Act, it-was.--resolved?::-on- the.: motion of Mr Shephard, that discussion on this j point be postponed untilnext meeting. Itesolved, on the motion, of Mr. Smith, that £60 be set apart as a contribution towards the erection of a teacher's house at Eighty--eight Valley, this amount to be made chargeable on the .
