Wellington, February 25. The Governor leaves for Auckland on Saturday. A deputation from the Coal Company waited on the Premier" yesterday regarding "a subsidy to the Company. The Premier stated that though the Government previously thought they could subsidise screw colliers, they found that the Public "Works A ct confined itself to working and prospecfciDgcoalmines. 'JheGovernmentwiUbeprepared to bring on the, question of subsidising screw colliers next session. Auckland, February 25. The floods have "washed away the Kawakawa bridges, causiug difficulty in loading vessels with coal; several vessels are leaving without cargoes. The bridges "will take months to repair. A meeting was held yesterday to form a committee to arrange a complimentary ball to the Governor before bis departure. The purchase of the steamer Star of the South for the Fiji mail service is completed. Chbistchxtboh, February 25. Canterbury Flax Weaving and Spinning Company has been formed; capital £20,000 in £10 shares. Dunedin, February 25. Cyrus Haley, the notorious Auckland convict, attempted to escape from gaol on Sunday, but was followed by the warders and recaptured.
