The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1873.

Bush Fire. — -A large bush fire has been burning for several days in Happy Valley, and on Thursday evening it was feared that tbe residence of Mr James Close would be burnt down. The heat and smoke have been quite oppressive in tbe neighborhood. Magistrate's Court. — Harvey v. Ching. This was an action to recover the sum of £15, the value of nine sheep and six goats, at £1 a head, killed by dogs belonging to the defendant. Evidence was taken at great length, and eventually the plaintiff was nonsuited, each party to pay his own costs. Concert. — A complimentary concert is to be given by the members of the Philharmonic Society and others to Mrs Scaife and Mr Walcot who have always been ready to render every assistance in their power at the various musical entertainments got up in Nelson. The programme for Monday evening is a very excellent one and we hope to see a bumper house. The s.s. Lady Bird.— This steamship, we learn, has been almost rebuilt, although her lines have been carefully maintained, and it is therefore expected tbat she. will be capable of going at great speed. Her cabin accommodation is of the most perfect kind, and superior, it is stated, to tbat of vessels calling here. The old engines of the Airedale have been put in her.
