The Independent of to-day, in its summary article, snys that at present no steps huve been tßken to fill the seat rendt red vacant by Mr Hall's resignation It is rumored that Mr Shephard, of Nelson, has been promiaid a seat in the Ministry, but the possibility r>f such a promise being given effect to is very distant. It is quite certain that the appointment of Mr Shephard would be unpopular, and -would alienate many of the best friends of the Ministry, not because of any personal objection to tha*- gentleman, but on account of the impossibility of discovering what claim he has upon a party which he only joined at the last moment, at a critical period, and after he had carefully ascertained tbat it was likely to be t'»e winning side , He would not impart the least additional strength to any Ministry, whilst he would ceitainly cost it a few votes. The estimated monthly consumption of coal here is 2500 tons. Entries for the inter provincial regatta will not be received after to-day. Chkistobtjhch, February 15.
